4 videos I stumbled across this week.
First up, a great little animated text video of Ira Glass’s key advice for storytellers. This is the advice I paraphrased recently when interviewed by Nuala Ní Chonchúir. It’s the advice I wish someone had given me when I was trapped in the cycle of negatively comparing my early writing efforts to the polished drafts of writers I love. It’s possibly the most important advice a novice author could receive.

This video to promote the Penguin English Library is a little slice of lovely. The books themselves don’t look bad either.

Found this short film by filmmaker Dan Powell (not me) via the Google alert I have running on my name. It was refreshing to receive notification of something that wasn’t to do with breeding chickens or American politics. I like the way this documentary becomes a short story as Rania discusses the contents of her bag. A fine example of show don’t/and tell.

And to finish, Etgar Keret reading ‘What Do We Have In Our Pockets’ from his new collection Suddenly, a Knock on the Door. It mirrors the Out of the Bag film above nicely and is a prime example of the sort of wonderful short short that Keret does so well. Enjoy.

Great advice from Ira Glass. YES! I hope it’s OK to still feel like that all these years later…
I know what you mean. I still look at my work and think it’s no good. I’m just more patient about working it to the point where it’s that little bit closer to what I intended each time.
