This week saw the first image of a black hole being shared with the world.

Tickles me that, as this image was powering across the the news and social media, I was busy listening to William Basinski’s On Time Out of Time, ‘50 minutes of drone atmospherics that uses exclusive source recordings from the interferometers of LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) capturing the sounds of the merging of two distant massive black holes, 1.3 billion years ago‘, on a loop as ambient soundtrack for my writing.

Basinski’s latest drone masterpiece serves well as soundtrack for the newly released videos of the black hole, though doing so has the capacity to radically reframe our limited perceptions of time and space.

You can listen to it here:

And for more on the black hole image and the woman who made its capture possible, check out BBC News.
